At Angling Direct, we believe every small step towards sustainability can make a big difference in creating a better future for all. By making simple changes to the way we provide fishing tackle, we can contribute to a healthier planet not just for ourselves, but for the fish and wildlife too.

As responsible anglers who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, Angling Direct wants to inspire our customers to take care of the environment. At Angling Direct, we are committed to doing our part in promoting sustainability. Let’s work together towards a brighter tomorrow, both on and off the water!

Our Approach

Packaging to Reduce Waste

We recognise the importance of reducing waste and minimising our environmental footprint. One area where we focus our efforts is in packaging. We are committed to using sustainable packaging materials and reducing unnecessary waste. This includes opting for recyclable and biodegradable packaging whenever possible.

Encouraging Our Suppliers to Think Green

We believe in a fair and safe workplace for all, these values also extend to our own brand supply chain of overseas suppliers and vendors.  We require our suppliers to complete a SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) to improve standards and working conditions across the globe.

Corporate Responsibility and Accountability

Angling Direct is on a journey to create a sustainable future and we want to ensure that journey is transparent, credible, impactful, and measurable. To ensure we achieve our aims, we partnered with carbon consultancy Enistic which calculates and tracks our carbon emissions under the GHG protocol.

Eco-Friendly Products

Angling Direct offers a wide range of eco-friendly fishing gear and accessories, including products made from sustainable materials and alternatives to single-use plastics. Our selection includes the Sufix Recycline Green Monofilament, a high-performance fishing line made from 100% recycled materials.

Recycling Services

At Angling Direct, we understand the impact that recycling can have on reducing the waste created by our hobby. From excess card and plastic tackle packaging, to old line and batteries, we offer a recycling service in all new stores, where customers can recycle and we'll do the rest.

Fishing Lines

Not only can your old line be made into something new but it’s keeping that fishing line waste away from the fish’s habitat as well as the surrounding wildlife. We thank all the anglers who drop off their nests of used fishing lines on their visits!

Sustainable Fishing Practices

Sustainable fishing practices are crucial for the preservation of fish populations and their habitats. At Angling Direct, we promote these practices through education on the Angling Direct Blog and via ADTV, our YouTube channel.

Sustainable Shipping Methods

At Angling Direct, we prioritise sustainable shipping for your fishing tackle. We’ve partnered with the UK’s leading couriers, DX Group and Royal Mail, both of which are deeply committed to reducing their environmental impact.

Carbon Reduction Projects

We aim to implement the following carbon reduction projects to reach our emission goals.

Replacing lighting with LEDs: LED lighting is superior to other types (such as incandescent and fluorescent lighting), outperforming them in nearly every aspect. The most significant benefits are its extremely low power consumption and its lifespan. All of our new stores are fitted with LED lighting. We are changing our lighting to LEDs across more of our fishing tackle stores (Scunthorpe, Hull, Wilmslow and Lincoln). This will bring our total of stores with LED lighting to 9. That is 20% of our branches. Plan to complete seven more stores in 2024. so, 35% of the estate. By installing LEDs across these stores it will reduce the emissions produced from lighting.

Replacing old vehicles with electric and hybrid vehicles: We are currently moving our entire company fleet to electric or hybrid vehicles. In 2022, our company vehicles make up 42% of our transport emissions. Therefore, moving over to electric and hybrid vehicles would make a significant impact. Increase downstream data accuracy: We will aim to improve how we collect our transportation and distribution data by introducing new measures to monitor miles travelled.

Carbon And Energy Efficiency Actions

Our business is undertaking a strategic review to ensure our carbon reduction efforts, are included across the whole business from our suppliers to our operations and down to our customers.

We are focused on the most impactful and valuable areas and have thus set a goal to be net zero by 2050. The graph below depicts our projected vs. targeted emissions.

Starting with our emissions from the baseline year (2021-22), the projected bar shows our potential emissions as we introduce carbon reduction plans. The target bar shows carbon emissions based on our 2050 Net Zero target. As you can see we are currently on track to reach our target.

Partner Organisations

We wish to nurture our people, protect the world we live in, and enhance the communities around us so everyone can enjoy the outdoors for generations to come. With a real commitment to building a business that has a positive impact on the world.

We are proud to be a trade associate partner to the Angling Trust, a not-for-profit organisation representing anglers, fighting for fish, fishing, and the environment. They are also recognised as a National Governing Body for angling in England and partner with Visit Wales and NRW to promote Fishing in Wales.

Anglers Against Pollution

Angling Direct is an avid supporter of the Anglers Against Pollution campaign. They have campaigned for cleaner waterways since 1948 and their new campaign, Anglers Against Pollution seeks to give anglers a voice in the fight for a better future for the environment.

Clean Ocean Project

In May 2023, Angling Direct joined Suzuki, Marine Power and Ocean R for their Clean Ocean Event. This entailed collecting rubbish from the River Yare and the Broads, near Angling Directs’s HQ. We are excited to support this initiative for future projects for more river and beach clean-ups.

Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme

In early 2018, the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS), was launched. It remains a voluntary program to this day with funding for the scheme provided through donations from anglers, tackle shops, fisheries, tackle manufacturers, and other organisations committed to sustainability.

4 Environmental Petitions to Help Our Rivers & Angling

Anglers Against Pollution

Consider supporting Angling Trust’s #AnglersAgainstPollution campaign Angling Trust by signing their petition which urged The Environment Agency and Natural Resource Wales to enhance pollution monitoring and enforcement in water bodies and reverse recent service cuts.

Rescue Our Rivers - River Action UK

If you are concerned about the levels of pollution found in our rivers, then you might want to support the River Action’s ‘Give us our rivers back’ campaign as they are calling on political leaders to rescue Britain’s rivers for nature and people from issues such as sewage pollution, agriculture pollution and more. Sign their petition to help restore UK rivers.

End Sewage Pollution - River Trust

Although this Petition has already been taken to Parliament, you can still support the River Trust and help clean up our rivers with donations towards the End Sewage Pollution campaign. Also, if you have free time, volunteering for a river clean-up is a great way to help.

Climate Action Appeal National Trust

Another great campaign worth researching is the Climate Action Appeal. The National Trust is asking for donations to support vital conservation work needed to ensure that precious landscapes can lock up carbon, support wildlife and become resilient to flooding, wildfires and extreme temperatures. Many great fishing lakes are on National Trust property so it certainly benefits anglers too!
