Minnow

Minnow

aka Phoxinus phoxinus

Usually with a striped banding similar to perch, minnow are actually a small member of the carp family. The male minnow can also be confused with a three-spined stickleback. As a primary food source for many predators, minnow hide anywhere shallow, with low flows and cover. The European Minnow is found throughout Europe and into Eurasia Minnows, in most slack waters and back eddies. The minnow can be identified by its olive brown colour, darker bars running along its back, short, rounded dorsal fin and an upturned mouth.

FactDespite its tiny size, the minnow will stay in a body of water long after other species of fish have perished from lack of oxygen or pollution. This means that minnows can be researched for impacts on the ecosystem and are an indicator of very deteriorated water if they are starting to disappear.

Catch Experience Catch Experience

Minnows (Phoxinus Phoxinus), do not tend to be targeted by anglers. However, they make a great baitfish to stock up on for landing predators such as brown trout and are easy to catch. Minnows, commonly known to be the main prey for many predators in the sea, are small and will catch on to any bait it is presented with. They can be found in rivers and shallow waters; anglers usually catch them in bulk as they are often used as live bait. It is crucial to check the conservation restrictions of the area first. Setting up during sunny days or daytime will provide clarity to spot them. One of the most common ways to catch them is using a seine net, which, in a team of two, using a heavy net with one person on each side is a guarantee to catch plenty. The more patient approach is using bait traps with bottles and setting the trap overnight. The old fashioned way will require small hooks and small size baits, usually at a size 32. Depending on the amount desired, this process might be a long and frustrating one, hence why most use the seine net method. To keep them alive as baits, they must be kept in the same water they were fished from. It is vital not to keep them in a bucket for too long without any circulation, which could cause them to run out of oxygen and die. Instead, using a pump with filtered air into the bucket and occasionally adding more water will keep them alive. This is done once the minnows are seen turning into their bellies or sides.
