Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – June

This last fortnight has seen some really unsettled weather and some cancelled trips, but luckily we have still managed to get out on most days and when we have been out, the fishing has been excellent, both inshore and offshore.

The bigger smoothounds are now arriving with the best at 15lb last Sunday on our boat, caught by kevin Rolfe from Maldon. These big females are coming into the Estuary to spawn and must be returned alive to ensure future stocks for all.

The best baits to target these hard fighting fish is with doubt any sort of Crab, with Hermits being the number one choice. Both Soft and Peeler Crab also account for a large amount of fish, especially when combined with some Ragworm.

There are plenty of small to medium Hounds turning up and these fish will also take all crab baits fished hard on the bottom.

There are a lot more Bass around both inshore and offshore, the smaller fish falling to worm baits, either Lug or Rag, whilst the bigger solitary fish are preferring a whole Squid or fresh Mackerel chunk.

There are still good numbers of Thornbacks inshore and with the females still spawning they will probably stay in for a few more weeks yet, which is excellent news for our anglers as this is another viable sporting target, especially if there weather is a little rough and we cannot get offshore.

There are a few Codling along the North Essex coastline and just on Monday we had around a dozen to over 2lb. These fish were caught really close in, it was too windy to get off anywhere else, and on days like this it makes me think how lucky we are to have these sheltered waters and an abundance of fish so close in!

Prospects are excellent with good numbers of bigger Hounds and Bass showing up, so make the most of it and get out there!
