There has been a big change in the seasons over the last fortnight, lots more summer species have arrived and the last of the winter fish have departed.
The Smoothounds are starting to show up in good numbers and already there's been reports of fish up to around 12 lb, most of these fish will take a Crab or Hermit bait but Ragworm will also work well. The smaller male fish are also easily enticed with a nice piece of squid.
There have been some good catches of Bass in all areas with fish over 10 lb reported. If you want to target these hard fighting bars of silver then Squid or Worm baits are the way forward. If the water is clear enough then lures or feathers will also account for large numbers of fish. Don't forget if your targeting the Bass there's now a limit of three fish per angler.
A classic summer species, that everyone loves; the mackerel, are also starting to show up in a few areas. Once the water properly clears and as temperatures warm these will become a lot more abundant.
The Thornbacks are still thick on the ground both inshore and offshore, however the inshore fish will move off within the next few weeks, leaving only the offshore fish. These will stay all year round and are still a viable target to anglers wishing to fish for them.
There haven't been any reports of Tope on rod and line as yet, but we will be targeting them as soon as the Mackerel turn up properly, as I mentioned above, when the water properly clears. Don't forget if you fancy targeting Tope then be sure to use a good quality wire trace and some strong tackle.
Prospects are excellent with a really good chance of catching a big hard fighting fish from most areas!
