Chinook III Charter Fishing Report – April II

The weather and fishing has been superb recently and we've enjoyed some big hauls of Cod and Thornbacks.

The Cod are hanging on for a surprisingly long time this spring and normally we'd fully expected them to be gone by now, but numbers are still good with catches of over 100 fish a day on some days. The average size has been around 3lb, but there's been plenty of better ones mixed in, with fish of 4-5lb not uncommon.

There are a few better ones showing up too, with the best at 7lb caught by Chris Collins from Angling Direct this week. This fish took a Squid and Lug cocktail and was part of a cracking mixed day of Cod and Thornbacks, with all fish returned alive.

As the weather and waters warm, theres been an increasing number of Thornbacks starting to show, with plenty of double figure female fish falling to anglers baits. These big female Thornbacks are full of egg sacks and should be returned alive to breed. The best baits to target these fish are Squid and Lugworm, this will also see you in with a good chance of a Cod or Bass too.

Whilst mentioning Bass, there's been lots more starting to show and the reports have been fairly encouraging, once the Codling have moved offshore we'll certainly be targeting them.

The piers and shore marks have been fishing well on the bigger tides for Codling, Whiting, Thornbacks and Dogfish with odd school Bass mixed in, best baits have been a mixture of Squid, Crab and Worm and using anyone or combination of these, will put you in with a good chance of a fish or two.

Prospects are excellent, the Cod are still here in big numbers and with the Thornbacks and a few Bass showing you've never had it so good!!!

Tight lines, Phil.
