Since my last report from a few weeks back the fishing has really begun to pick up with good catches of Thornbacks, Codling, Bass and Dabs.
The offshore fishing has been particularly excellent with good numbers of Thornbacks showing in pretty much all areas. Depending on the sea temperatures these fish should be around for most of the winter now and are a great sporting fish for anglers to target, with the best baits being Squid and Worm.
The Bass are still shoaling up on the offshore banks, but it won’t be long now before they move off for the winter. While they are here though they make for some great sport, and last week and over the weekend we enjoyed some excellent action, with fish up to around 6lb.
As well as the Bass there has also been some cracking dabs showing on the offshore banks, these lovely flatfish like a small Lugworm or Ragworm bait fished hard on the bottom and the best periods to target them has been when there is barely any tide running.
The fishing Inshore has been very good with lots of small Codling showing along the northern coastline, these little fish are very hungry at the moment and are putting on weight fast, the best baits for these has once again been Squid and Lugworm.
There are also plenty of Thornbacks inshore, with fish to around 12lb being the best reported so far, most of these fish are females which have spawned, but there are increasing numbers of the smaller males starting to show. As you’d expect there has also been plenty of small whiting around, these will increase in numbers as the weeks and months progress, and hopefully in size too.
The piers are now starting to fish too, with Codling, Whiting, school Bass and Thornbacks, being landed on a mixture of Crab, Squid and Worms.
With bigger Codling now starting to show further along the coast it looks like we could be in for a good few weeks/months!
