Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – March
The weather has been glorious this weekend and our lucky anglers have had some excellent sport.
The Thornback Rays have made a big push inshore and good numbers are now starting to show! Many fish caught are females and these fish are getting ready to spawn, so are returned alive immediately. The best bait to target these wonderful fish has been squid and herring, but all fish and crab baits seem to work well.
There were fewer Cod this weekend, but this is because many of the Herring are leaving the estuary, after a few days we should be able to catch them again, as once they realize the Herring have gone, they will soon turn there attentions back to the Crabs on the bottom! However, I’m slightly concerned this year, that because of the warm sea temperatures, the Cod might venture offshore a little earlier than normal!
The piers are fishing well on the big tides with Codling, Whiting and occasional Thornback showing; the best baits have been Lug and Squid.
The estuaries should improve over the next fortnight as the Herring leave and as I said, this will hopefully give us a chance to get some spring Codling and Whiting if the weather changes.
Offshore fishing is also starting to improve with good numbers of Thornbacks starting to show and odd Codling, if the spring run does turn up properly then there could be good numbers of Cod with one or two better fish mixed in.
In general I’m very positive at the moment, the prospects look excellent and currently there’s a good mix of fish around.
