The weather has been a little unsettled over the last week but we have still managed to get out most days and when we have the fishing has been fantastic! There has been huge numbers of big mackerel turning up offshore and with the clear water they have been relatively easy to find.
An influx of Mackerel has also seen an increasing number of Tope, the best we’ve had so far, landed Friday, was a lovely fish on 35lb. On the same day we also landed lots of smaller fish and heard stories of two 40lb fish landed on other boats. As you’d expect the best baits for these hard fighting sharks is fresh Mackerel.
Out on the sandy ground we’ve started to pick up a few Turbot, a lovely fish of 4lb was taken on Sunday, but Wayne Ely from Rayleigh. These fish will fall to a variety of baits, but once again you can’t beat a bit of fresh Mackerel.
In some areas there has been some nice catches of shoaling Bass, with these fish being tightly grouped chasing bait fish, they have been landed on lures and feathers. If you can find such groups you can expect some explosive action!
As the month progresses more and more Smoothound are starting to show, with fish up to 14lb being reported from some boats in some areas. The bigger fish tend to fall to Crab baits, with either Hermit or Peeler being the preferred choice. The small fish will generally eat anything, with Squid being a popular choice.
There are still plenty of Thornbacks showing, however most of these fish are now being landed offshore. As the water is warmer and clearer these fish tend to fight a lot harder and are certainly a worthy sporting quarry. Squid and Mackerel is by far the best bait if you fancy targeting them.
Last week we also landed the very first Gurnards of the season, these beautiful fish, in and around the 3lb mark, offer some great sport on light tackle.
As you can probably see from my report, the fishing is extremely varied and the waters are rich with fish, it looks like this year could be one of the best ever!
