First of all, I’d just like to wish everyone a happy new year and secondly I’d like to say that he fishing off the Essex coast has continued in the same vein since my last report and to put it bluntly it’s been excellent!
There are still very good numbers of Codling showing in most area’s and all the time the average size is increasing, with lots of fish now around the 3-4lb mark, with a few better one’s around the 6-10lb sprinkled in for good measure. Most of these fish have been in fighting fit and in prime condition and as you’d expect have been falling to a variety of baits, with Lugworm and Squid cocktails proving most popular.
As well as the Codling there has also been good numbers of Thornback around, with fish to double figures not that uncommon and providing we don’t get a prolonged cold spell they should hang around for the rest of the winter now.
The shoals of fish in the Estuaries have thinned out a little now, but on the bigger spring tides there has still been plenty of fish caught, with Codling, Whiting and Thornbacks all making an appearance. Once again decent sized Lugworm and/or Squid baits have been the order of the day.
In general the fishing offshore has also been quiet, however there has been one of two better Cod reported and with the lack of Herrings and Sprats for them to become pre-occupied on, there’s the chance of one or two real crackers turning up!
The piers have still been producing but once again it’s all about picking the right tide, with the bigger tides of the month yielding the best results. Whiting, Codling and the odd Thornback can all be expected if you manage to time it right.
Looking ahead and providing the weather stays relatively mild we should carry on course for a winter to remember and certainly one of the best for some time!
