Chinook II Charter Fishing Report – April

Relatively settled weather has been with us for the past few weeks, meaning we have been able to get out to sea most days. This has resulted in some superb sport for our anglers, with some very nice catches of Thornback Ray in most areas.

As they migrate inshore to spawn they really have taken over the fishing grounds and bumper catches aren’t unusual, the fact we return all females and the huge majority of males, means they should be here for the future and we can enjoy them again next year and for many years to come.

This week we saw the first proper arrival of the summer species, as we had the first decent Bass onboard and the first run of Smoothound.

Even though we are now heading towards the start of May we are still seeing the odd Codling and Whiting being landed along the North Essex coastline, many of these fish are small, but hopefully if they can avoid all man and nature has to throw at them, they will grow on and offer some great sport next winter.

Offshore there are yet more Thornbacks as well as a few Smoothound, Bass and even the odd Spurdog. These hard fighting fish come through the Estuary at this time of year, but as a general rule they normally stay well offshore, however on the right tides they can be targeted and a chance of a real big fish is always on the cards.

I know I keep saying it, but the prospects look excellent and the signs are encouraging for a superb season ahead!
