Brand New Pipe Bins - Expanding our Partnership with ANLRS

At Angling Direct, we’re committed to protecting the future of our sport and the environment. That’s why we continue our partnership with the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS). We’re working together to tackle the growing problem of discarded fishing line and spools by providing a practical way for anglers to recycle these items. In addition to the line recycling box-bins that you can find in all our stores, we’re supplying all of our stores with two additional pipe-bins. These bins will be placed at popular local fisheries and angling club waters, so they’re easy to access for everyone.

As anglers, we know the impact plastic pollution has on our waterways. Discarded fishing line is one of the biggest culprits. Taking up to 600 years to break down, every meter of plastic line that has ever been left on the bank or sent to landfill is still in the environment today, posing a serious entanglement risk to other users of our waterways and to wildlife.

Protecting our waters

We will be working closely with fisheries from January 2025 to install the pipe bins in the best spots, and we handle the recycling process to make it as simple as possible. Anglers can drop off their used fishing lines, which are then collected, sorted and sent for recycling. By making this effort, we’re helping to keep our waters clean and safe for everyone to enjoy and crucially preventing any fishing line from polluting the environment or going to landfill.

We would like to thank Korda for co-sponsoring the Chelmsford, Colchester, and Rayleigh line collection locations. Their support has helped us expand the ANLRS Line Recycling initiative across Essex, making it even easier for local anglers to recycle their fishing line and contribute to protecting the environment.

Making a difference

Since 2022, we’ve collected 7,252,280 meters of fishing line, representing over 8 percent of the total line collected by ANLRS from tackle shops and fishery bins. Alongside this huge amount of line over 1500 plastic spools and 13,700 meters of braid has also been returned to the ANLRS. Our efforts have made a real impact and thanks to our customers for their efforts in bring their line into the stores.

Between January 2024 and January 2025, we collected 1,876,300 meters of line through our shops. That's an increase of 35 percent in the last year alone. We’re really proud of the work we have done so far but keeping in mind that about 400,000,000 meters of line is discarded every year in the UK, there’s still a long way to go.

What can anglers do to help?

Here’s a few easy steps we can all take as anglers to make a huge difference in reducing fishing line pollution:

Always recycle your used fishing line in dedicated recycling bins, available at many tackle shops and Angling Direct stores.

Avoid leaving line behind by cleaning up after each session, and consider using biodegradable lines to reduce long-term environmental impact.

Support line recycling initiatives, encourage fellow anglers to do the same, and always be mindful of the environment.

At Angling Direct, we’re proud to play our part in creating a more sustainable future for anglers and the planet. Our work with ANLRS is just one of many steps we’re taking to protect the environment.
