We hope you enjoyed our Match Masterclass video; Pellet Waggler Fishing At Suffolk Waterpark where Steve Crowe talks you through his approach to pellet waggler fishing and shares the tackle, rigs and tips that help him catch more carp.

To help you follow Steve’s tactics and tips from Suffolk Waterpark, we have broken down the fishing tackle that Steve used in this Match Masterclass video and the reasons behind why they were effective in the session.

Float Rod: Advanta X5 Power Float Rod

When it comes to selecting a float rod, Steve almost always opts for 11ft rod lengths, unless the fishing is at long range. The main features to look for with pellet waggler methods are rod that are lightweight and powerful, after all you’re targeting large carp and holding your rod for most of the day.

Reel: Matrix Aquos Ultra Reels

Selecting the correct reel is just as important as the rod. You will be holding your reel for most of the day. Normally a reel between 2000-4000 in size will accompany an 11ft rod perfectly.

Landing Net: Matrix Carp Landing Net

Fish care is the most important part of fishing so using a fish-friendly mesh on both your landing net and keepnet will ensure all the fish are returned safely. Steve uses a 55 x 45cm landing net from Matrix as it is extremely light and easy to scoop fish at your first opportunity.

Mainline: Guru Pulse Line 300m

Catching large carp on the pellet waggler puts huge stress on your mainline, often the baits are explosive and unpredictable. It’s of the utmost importance your line is strong and most importantly reliable, for Steve, an 8lb mainline give him the reassurance he needs to land any commercial carp.

Wagglers: Matrix Loaded Pellet Waggler

Selecting the correct waggler is something that takes time to learn. Each day will offer different challenges but by having a selection of pellet wagglers you should be covered for all situations. One day you could need a large waggler to reach feeding fish, the next a small lightweight waggler to make no disturbance when hitting the water. Steve’s top tip would be to build a small collection of different styles and sizes over time.

Float Kits: Korum Ready Float Kits

Being able to change your waggler float quickly is ultra-important as this allows for you to react to any changes in weather or how the fish are feeding. Steve uses a waggler attachment for all his fishing meaning that he can swap his waggler in seconds.

Hooklinks: Matrix MXC-4 Eyed Barbless X-Strong Bait Band Rigs 45cm

Pre-tied hooklinks are now better than ever, in fact, it’s very rare that Steve will tie his own. Steve opted to use the Matrix MCX-4 18” bait bands for his pellet waggler fishing. With this rig kit all that’s left to do is select the correct size of hook for the fish you are targeting.

Bait: Mainline Match Activated Carp Cell Pellets

When it comes to pellet waggler fishing, 8mm pellets will cover 95% of your fishing situations. The Mainline Match Activated Carp Cell Pellets are designed for the match angler and are available in a 1kg resealable bag designed to maintain total freshness.

Bait Additive: Mainline Match Pellet Colourant Additive 100ml

If you are looking for a way to boost your hookbait to the next level, try adding a few drops of the Mainline flavoured liquid. This bait liquid has proven very successful for Steve over the last few years.
