ADTV Match Masterclass - Dobbing Bread In Winter

During the colder months, dobbing bread is arguably one of the most devastating methods in a match angler's armoury. In this instalment of Match Masterclass, Steve heads on down to Meadow Farm Cottages to demonstrate his approach. Steve also shares the tackle, rigs and tips that help him catch more Carp.

Landing Net:

Fish care is the most important part of fishing so using a fish-friendly mesh on both your landing net and keepnet will ensure all the fish are returned safely. Steve uses a 55 x 45cm landing net from Matrix as it is extremely light and easy to scoop fish at your first opportunity.

Hooklinks:

Pre-tied hooklinks are now better than ever, in fact, it’s very rare that Steve will tie his own. Steve opted to use the Matrix MCX-1 range for his dobbing bread rigs.

Bait Additive:

Korda Goo- Shop HERE

Hinders Betalin 50ml - Shop HERE

If you are looking for a way to boost your hookbait to the next level, try adding a few drops of Korda Goo or Hinders Betalin. These liquids have proven very successful for Steve over the last few years.

Elastic:

Matrix Slik Elastics - Shop HERE

Since Steve changed to Matrix Slik elastic he has never looked back. The Slik elastic acts like the perfect hybrid elastic as you can get the stretch of hollow elastic but after a few pulls on the puller bung, you notice the power of a solid elastic. With the fish averaging 1-5lb during Steve’s session, he used the sized 12-14 orange Slik elastic.

Pole Float:

When choosing a float for dobbing bread, ensure they include the 2 main features.

1) Wire stem for stability.

2) Hollow bristle for extra buoyancy and bite detection.

Shot:

Guru Micro Cubes - Shop HERE

When dobbing bread you often find the need to move your float and shotting pattern. To ensure no line damage, Steve recommends cube weights rather than round shot.

Bread Punches:

Punching discs of bread isn’t very technical however, Steve opted to use the Matrix Compression punches, offering 3 different sizes to suit all situations.

Seat Box:

Matrix S36 Super Box Lime inc Shallow Trays - Shop HERE

When fishing with long poles, especially in windy conditions it's important you sit comfortably. The Matrix S36 is certainly at the higher end of the range, but it does offer extreme comfort and can easily be adjusted to suit your needs.

Pole Rollers:

Matrix Freeflow Quad Roller - Shop HERE

Pole rollers are often over-looked and something anglers spend very little money on compared to the fishing pole itself, however, having a pole roller that is firstly friendly on the delicate carbon, and secondly fully adjustable to suit uneven banks will ensure you can fish effectively and protect your pole from damage.
